What Makes An Artist?

Everyone is an artist. Art is about perspective and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Impacting art has depth. Engaging art depends on the intensity of humanity involved in the method of execution. Thus expression of inner-self creates profound art. Society limits us from true expression through social constructs, labels and categories.

All successful artists measure success similarily. Happiness is always at the forefront of everyone’s mind. Yet it appears, all most all forms of music and artistic expression remain moulded by struggle and sacrifice. A sort of haunting spirit hovers around exceptional artists. We all know the struggles many musicians and other artists have faced or face continuously.

The following people all faced unique adversity and struggles, although they produced exceptional works.

Does An Ominous Energy Haunt Self-Expression?

The most exceptional works of art ever produced come from worn-tattered hands and tarnished voices. Typical wear and tear do not occur its atmospheric pressure in a sense. A particular environment is what creates the turmoil necessary to produce an artist capable of exquisite work. The type of environment that is essentially a pressure cooker of sorts. Harsh landscapes and critical engagements create a raw tarnish over voices. Bigotry and ultraism lace hard-working hands with rust.

What is it about dark, grungy, specific yet ambiguous environments? Something lurks within dark crevasses to produce extraordinary light.

“We of the craft are all crazy. Some are affected by gaiety, others by melancholy, but all are more or less touched.”

-Lord Byron-

Upon further inspection of the category of deep thought, it becomes irrevocably noticeable. Environments have profound effects on an individual’s perception & eventual interpretation. Certain aspects of circumstance coupled with determination. Determined creators design novel mediums because of specific experiences. These approaches are most relevant to the experiencer or the producer of a medium. However, bystanders often create unique interpretations of the same medium.

Meaningful creations share the same shell, emotion and perspective. Integrity within a work of art is what speaks volumes to spectators. The amount of emotion invoked and differing outlooks included in created mediums increase integrity, creating impact. Perhaps, anyone can produce an artistic-work granted its interpretable and its meaning communicates impact.

Do You See What I See?

Messages conveyed through mediums are either straightforward or are often incredibly sparse. Outsiders and the creator(s) maintain emotions and perspectives. Making interpretations constant, a process of perpetual innovation. Creative liberty is rampant, no matter the medium, outside observers make consistent judgements of creations. Mediums exist simultaneously, already to a creator and many different observers.

For example;

Attach a weight to a wheel. This wheel spins 360-degrees on an axel.

With enough force, the wheel turns 180-degrees.

Gravity and physics cause the wheel to turn another 180-degrees with help from the weight.

The weight represents an interpretation. The axel is the world, and the wheel is the created medium. Gravity and physics are constant external forces in the environment.

If the weight did not exist for the purpose to impose, the wheel would be stationary. Without the environment influencing interpretations created mediums remain still in the world.

So, maybe the initial interpretation does not accent the environment enough when creations take time to gain relevancy. Without specific factors within an ecosystem, a created work may suffer from neglect. Recognition is a guarantee of any created work, dependent on the value of impact. The originality of a created work depends on circumstances —
situations that escape the capacity of the creator yet, it floods their work.

Art, in its most profound state, relies heavily on the number of interpretable instances it represents. When an environment has a sphere of influence over a creator, art becomes an escape or distraction from said influence. The significant parts of created works are formal representations of character from a stand-point of originality. Originality without qualities of relatability leads to a potentially skewed viewed either intentional or not. A domino effect ensues, creators and their respective professions are subjects of their environments, created works are then the direct rebuttal to their environment. It may not be clear what stance a creator chooses to create from this is what gives artistic expression such a broad range.

To an outsider looking in, expressions inside art are like shadows of a soul. Traces and imprints, left by both, yet to distinguish what exactly made the impression, one goes mad looking for clues of instance.

For it’s not exactly a mad mind that creates excellent works, but a tormented soul that languishes to be released.

Our Soul-Brush

Energy from thyself in the form of casual expression saturates the very meaning of art. Like wet smears of paint upon a freshly stretched canvas, self-expression immerses a creator’s work until eventual suffocation creates a whole new form of originality. Creativity sparks other interpretations and views, leading to abstraction from the original point presented by the creator. Established recognition of adopted works drives innovation into more spectrums and mediums of work.

The soul is originality. What you do with it is grounded in mentality.

It’s our unique weapon not restrained by ammunition.

Artists, musicians and other creatives are regular people. However, they are more adept at harnessing their souls, using it as an influence in their work. When being creative, people operate a level above the limitations imposed by environmental factors. Creators incorporating their soul in their creations produce highly impactful compositions.

The Master Of Pieces

Masterpieces are creative, imaginative works many levels beyond circumstantial limits. Dedicated creators produce elegant, incomparable works. Reproduced masterpieces carry nuances, making them distinguishable from originals. Alike there is a sort of foreboding sentiment that embodies a masterpiece. As if it begs for alteration, destruction or a fate worse — remaining unfinished.

What is a masterpiece? At what point does a creator decide, this is my masterpiece. If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, what does that say for the virtue of intolerance? Being subjected to harsh extremes, yet producing exceptionalities like none other. Despite pitfalls among creators, better judgement excels and even seems nourished by creativity and abstractions. Perhaps, the creator never intends on such a meaningful impact — it just happens.

It’s as if a masterpiece is just as alluring to the creator as the observer, a barrier immortalized by interpretations and intended meaning. If it was left exclusively to the creator, a so-called ‘masterpiece’ is never truly complete.
A true master of craft would spend eons working the same piece if knowing that at the point of apparent completion, the work is the harbinger of a masterpiece. It appears that maybe, ignorance truly is bliss. Knowing what type of work makes a masterpiece and what creates intentionally purposeful art is a thinly spread line — a line perhaps preventing madness, glue for the pieces. Shards held tightly together, eventually forming the masterpiece out of fragments. A classic is a pie with a little bit of everything.

Master Of Self — Master Of Expression

The master lives hidden inside numerous pieces. Creation rests within us all. Creativity is just the free form of soul, our inner-selves allowing expression to take charge, guiding our soul-brush. Harnessing the visions within yourself creates eternal representations of your rhetoric or thought process. Depictions of personality, through versatile mediums across a range of years. Like a jigsaw puzzle of persona made from the determined efforts that are otherwise effortless. If the master of self is the master of expression, then the chapters of your life represent the message.

What divides the modest and the artist?

The modest always has the potential of an artist. Differences come from details in creation. Both sides exposed — tears, pain, blood & sacrifice, only one creates with soul. Artists become modest after abandoning themselves or straining their abilities until exhaustion, trying to create more. Golems only breathe the fresh air of life when they have a purpose. Individuals have the capability of creating unique masterpieces, original to ourselves. Remaining humble and suppressing your capabilities results in a less creative person, becoming more modest as a result. Utilize your environment, rarely expressed abilities and determination to create intense works.

You must create if you expect recognition.

Struggle and sacrifices haunt the expressions of the remarkable artist.

Doomed to create not for thyself, but other less explainable reasons.

A masterwork is the embodiment of a creator’s psyche.
